Using Blowfish File Security
In this section we will be covering the following topics:

The Interface
The Blowfish File Security Interface is a 3 part ensemble that works with the greatest of ease. Below are the 3 parts dissected and accompanied by a brief explanation of each.

This part of the Blowfish interface is where files are handled.  Files are opened, encoded and decoded here.

This part of the Blowfish interface is where encryption keys may be randomly generated, manually entered, loaded or saved.  While this section appears and is simple to use, the power is maximized.

In this last section of the interface is where you may keep track of your encrypted data.  This feature is a powerful extra that allows you to save an encrypted copy of your files' state, path and key used for encoding.  We suggest using this approach as a way to keep track of your data.

Encrypt/Decrypt Tutorial
The following is a step-by-step tutorial that covers how to quickly and easily encrypt and decrypt files.
  • The first thing you should do is to select a file that you wish to encrypt and make a duplicate copy in a new folder.  This way you won't lose the original copy in the event you make an error throughout this tutorial. We suggest using an image file or a text file, this way you can see what happens when the file is encrypted and you try to open it.
  • Now that you have a file to experiment with, go ahead and launch the Blowfish File Security program from the Encryptex v2.0.5 toolbar by pressing
  • Once Blowfish File Security is running, you may then select your file by pressing the button, locate your file, select it, then press "open".
  • When the file is opened, you'll notice a couple of changes on your screen. The file path will appear in the "Current File" field, and you'll also notice a copy of the path appears in the "Add New Item" field.  You know the file is open if you see this information.
  • At this point you're ready to select a key to use for encryption. For this tutorial, let's go ahead and use a key that is already made by clicking the button.
  • When the file selector appears, chose the key file named "key00", then select open.
  • You should now see (   !6c:5f3x-,*f@xd   ) in the key field minus the ().
  • At this point everything is in place to encrypt the file and you may now press the button to encrypt the file.
  • The encryption process will take a moment or so, be patient. When your file has been encoded you will see:

  • Go ahead and click the okay button.
  • In addition to this, you will also notice the Encrypted File Information section has been filled out with the File's path and key used to encoded the file.  At this point it would be a good idea to save this information by clicking on the button and save this file.
  • *IMPORTANT* The Encrypted File Information system has been provided to help the user keep track of his/her encoded files.  This information file will also notify the user of the state of the file in the first line.  When the user saves this information file, this information is also encoded.  This ensures that no one else will have access to this information, unless the users gives this information to another Encryptex Pro v2.0.5 user.  If you wish for no one to have this information, save it to a floppy disk and store that floppy in a safe or vault.
  • Now that you understand how the file information works, you may decode the file press the  button to decrypt your file.  The decryption process is much faster than the encryption process, so you'll be ready for the next step in a few seconds.
  • When the file has finished decoding, you will see:.
  • Once the decryption process has completed you may go ahead and locate your file and try to open it.  If you followed our procedure exactly, your file will open as if it were never changed.  If you receive an error, you must have done something wrong. If this is the case, step through the tutorial once again until you are successful.

Special Notes
This section will cover some of the connective uses of Blowfish File Security with other Encryptex Pro v2.0 utilities as well as cover some important security issues.

  • Blowfish File Security is a powerful encryption tool that works quite well with our zip utility, or any archiving utility.  Simply create an archive as large as you like and protect the entire archive by encrypting it with Blowfish File Security.
  • It's a good idea to create an assortment of encryption keys ahead of time.  With our Random Key Generation system, creating obscure keys that are difficult to guess, is a snap!
  • When saving your keys, it's a good idea to save them to a floppy disk and printing them out on a hard copy.  This way you can store your encryption keys in a safe or vault where prying eyes would have a difficult time retrieving them. The level of security you put on your encryption keys is up to you and depends of the importance of your data.  If you're using Encryptex Pro v2.0 to lock up some naughty photographs you downloaded from the internet, keeping your keys on a floppy in a secret place in your home is probably best. However, if you're a CEO of a corporation on the verge of hitting it big, protect your secrets!
  • It's important to remember that Blowfish File Security is a solid method of encrypting any file of any size or type.  This isn't a toy that handles a few mundane file formats.  Blowfish will protect any file.  Don't be afraid to protect executables as well as documents or any other type of file.  Our Blowfish File Security can handle all of it.
  • If you're wondering if it's safe to transmit encrypted data across the internet, the answer is; MOST SAFE, as long as your encryption is SECURE. Blowfish File Security uses the Blowfish Algorithm created by Bruce Schneier which has no public keys, back door cracks or mathematical short-cuts.  Blowfish is among the strongest algorithms available.  The only attack against a file encrypted with Blowfish is "Brute Force".  This means that even if a hacker swipes a copy of your encrypted file, he/she would have to try every possible combination of keys between 8 to 16 characters in length trying to find the proper key.  Even with high-end computer equipment, this process can require decades until the proper key sequence is found.
  • Finally, it is important to always make back-ups of your important data.  Even when you have a solid system, data can still be lost in a disaster.  It's equally important to experiment with any encryption software on previously backed-up data before trusting it fully.  Be sure you know exactly what you're doing before trusting any software with your hard work.  We've provided a near bulletproof method, the rest is up to you.
