Introduction to Safe Chat

Safe Chat v1.1b is a direct approach to chatting in complete privacy across the internet.  Most people believe private chatrooms on AOL or IRC are private.  Other people believe ICQ, AIM and MSN Instant Messenger type programs are private.  The fact is, any chatroom can be monitored by any SysOP and log files are also created on the server as well.  As for ICQ and other instant messenger type programs, every last one retains a unique log file on your computer for every conversation you've ever had.  The messengers are also easy to breach and anyone with a few skills could be watching your conversation without you ever knowing they were doing so.

Safe Chat bypasses the traditional methods of chatting and allows any user to become the server.  Now instead of your conversation using some long distance computer as a hub, any user can become the hub and all data passed through the conversation goes through a user's computer, rather than someone elses.  In addition to the server feature, Safe Chat is also very difficult to breach because of subchanneling.  Since subchannels are name based with names as long as 1024 characters, cracking the subchannel name is next to impossible.

Now that you understand the purpose of Safe Chat, you should have a better understanding of how to implement it for your own uses.  We're not saying you should never use any public chat ever again.  What we are saying is to use Safe Chat for those private conversations when nobody except the people chatting should know what is being said.

Safe Chat will work with any TCP/IP network.  This means you can chat on any computer connected to the internet or internal network.  Whether it's in the office or at home, or even on a laptop with a wireless modem, you can chat in privacy with Safe Chat.

Please continue with the following sections to learn how to use Safe Chat effectively.

Tutorials

This section contains several tutorials.
  • How to host a chatroom
  • How to connect to another host's chatroom

How to Host a Chatroom

This tutorial will show you how to host a chat and become the chatroom server.  This will enable others to connect to your chatroom while you securely host it.  Simply follow the screens below and apply these steps when you are ready to host a chatroom using Safe Chat.

After you have connected to the internet, the first step is to launch the MOS server program.  You only need to do this once per chat session when hosting a chatroom.  Trying to run the server twice will only result in an error.

Once MOS is running, you will need to retrieve the Local Host IP address.  This number is highlighted in the above screen capture.  This number needs to be entered in the Host IP field of the Safe Chat user information area.

Now that you have the Local Host IP address, type the address into the Host IP field of the user information area as shown above in the highlighted field. At this time you should also enter in a Channel Name and a User Name of your choice.

If you are a broadband user, your IP changes maybe once or twice per year.  If you would like to skip this step after doing this for the first time, you can by simply saving your settings as either the default settings or custom settings.  If you chose default, the settings will be loaded each time you run Safe Chat.  If you chose custom, the settings will need to be loaded manually.

Once you have everything set-up and MOS is running, you must then connect your chatroom to the MOS server. Do so by clicking the button indicated by the arrow above. If you've successfully connected to the server, you will see the status bar change to "connected to MOS".

Now that you're connected to MOS, you must now click on the button indicated by the arrow above.  This will sign your chatroom onto to the server.  You will notice the status reads "signed onto MOS". You will also notice your username appear in the "connected users" list.  At this time you may have others connect to your chatroom by sending them your IP address and your channel name.  This is all the information another user needs to connect to your Safe Chat, so long as they are running Safe Chat as well.

How to Connect to Another Host's Chatroom

To connect to another host's chatroom, you only need 3 things.

  • A copy of Safe Chat

  • The Host's IP address

  • The channel name of their chatroom

With these three things, connecting to another host's chatroom is quite simple.  First, just fill out the user information fields with the appropriate information, the same as you would if you were hosting a chatroom yourself, except there is no need to run MOS.  Second, click on the "Connect to Server" button. Third, click on the "Sign-on to Channel" button.  If you did everything correctly, you will see all the connected users in the chatroom.

Important Information

1) in order for Safe Chat to work, you need to be connected to the internet or a TCP/IP network.

2) All parties that wish to chat through a Safe Chat host, must be also using Safe Chat.

3) Broadband users can save their settings with IP in tact for swifter hosting.

4) Safe Chat can run as long as your computer is running with very little resource consumption.

5) Dial-up users will be forced to change their IP information each time they connect to the internet.  This has nothing to do with Safe Chat, it's a dial-up issue.  Dial-up services use DHCP which automatically assigns you a different IP each time you connect.
