Introduction to Onux Simple Mode

The Onux Simple Mode interface offers a comprehensive approach to using Onux.  The interface is structured in such a way that even a complete novice should find using it, very easy.  Along with the new interface comes a new set of tools designed with simplicity in mind.  Continue below to find out more about how everything works with the Simple Mode Interface.

The Interface

As you can see from the screen capture above, the new Simple Mode interface is far less intimidating than the Advanced Mode interface.  In order to simplify things for beginners, many advanced features are not available when in Simple Mode.  Only the most critical aspects of Onux are available in Simple Mode and a whole new set of tools have been designed for easy use.

The buttons on the left hand side are extra options while in Simple Mode.  The buttons are self explanatory and when the mouse is over a button, a tool tip is displayed providing a brief description of what the button does.

The center of the interface is the crux of Simple Mode.  These four tools are the most commonly used tools that any user may need.  The Internet Cleanup Tool is a simplified version of Johnny Cache that will allow you to erase all the temp files created with MSIE and the Windows desktop.  The File Shredding tool is a condensed version of Shredder that will allow you to select and erase files that you no longer wish to keep on your hard drive, floppy disks, flash sticks or any removable media that stores data.  The Encryption Wizard is a step-by-step tool that will walk you through the process of encrypting a file.  The Decryption manager retains and displays a secure log of all the files you have encrypted using the Encryption wizard.  Decryption is done with a click of the mouse and there are no keys to remember.  All of these tools are very visual and comprehensive so that any user of any skill level should be able to use them with ease the first time.

At the top right hand corner of the interface is a button that displays a menu to access areas of your Windows System quickly and painlessly.

The clock and date below the Tools menu can be clicked to adjust the time and date of your computer.

The link on the bottom left will open your default web browser and take you to CronosLogic.com.

Using the Tools

Below is a detailed description of how to use each of the four main tools of the Simple Mode interface.

Internet Cleanup Tool

As you can see the Internet Cleanup tool is a three step process with no confusion.  By default, all temp file types are selected and you may chose to not remove some of your temp file types.  The second step loads the files, and the third step shreds the files.  Quick, painless and very simple.

File Shredding Tool

The Shredder tool is the most complicated of the four tools and is still very easy to use.  Below is a list of what each area of the Shredder is for.

1) Displays information about the selected file in the queue.

2) This is a file tree where you explore your hard drive to find files you wish to shred.

3) With these buttons you may add files and folders from the tree to the queue.

4) This dropdown box allows you to change the tree to a different drive.

5) This is the queue that displays the files you have selected for shredding.

6) This button displays a menu with 2 options for shredding.  You may shred the entire queue, or just the selected file in queue.

The Encryption Wizard is a real snap.  We will not display any images of the Encryption Wizard here because the wizard is as simple as it gets.  You will be walked through a series of steps with an explanation for each step.  If you don't understand how to use the Encryption Wizard, you probably won't be reading this either. :)

The Decryption Manager

The Decryption Manager is as simple as decryption can possibly get without seriously compromising the security of the files.  The main spreadsheet at the top of the interface displays a brief description of the encrypted file, the location of the file and when scrolled to the far left, the key used to encrypt the file is displayed.  The EFDBM database is protected by a user controlled key which may be modified at will by generating a new key and applying the changes.  To decrypt a file you simply select it from the spreadsheet and click the "Decrypt Selection" button.

Important Information

In order to create a simple interface for beginners, some trade-off had to be made.  Most of the more advanced features of Onux are not available in the Simple Mode interface but can still be accessed by switching to advanced mode.

In addition to the lack of advanced features, a critical security issue must also be noted.  While the encryption used with Simple Mode is very strong, the nature in which the EFDBM stores data may be compromised by a skilled hacker.  While the chances of this happening are slim, the threat does exist.  If you need that extra level of security for your data, we highly recommend using the Onux Advanced mode encryption options.  The Simple Mode Interface offers pretty secure encryption that will defeat your co-workers, friends and family, but won't stop an organized hacker with a fair amount of resources and skill.
